Thyrotoxicosis

Thyrotoxicosis is increased function of thyroid gland as a result of high levels of thyroid hormones (thyroxin) in the blood and tissues leading to disturbances of metabolism and the functions of the organism. The most often is Basedow disease. All ages are involved. This is organ specific autoimmune disease, in which the function of thyroid gland is constantly stimulated by specific antibodies. The first clinical symptoms are from the nervous system - emotional instability, nervousness, depression sweating, tremor of the hands. There are other complains - high pulse rate, extrasystolia, fatigue and muscle weakness, reduction of body weight with good appetite, diarrhoea, high temperature and menstrual disturbances. Also there can be arterial hypertension, diabetes and osteoporosis.
